Medical Leave and Movie Review Part 2

Duyung

Pengarah : Prof Madya Razak Mohaideen

Tanpa disedari, sejak kecil lagi, seekor duyung betina bernama Puteri, sering mengintip perbuatan baik Jimmy membersihkan pantai. Jimmy mencintai Aspalela (Yasmin Hani), anak dara Wak Pagek.

Maya nampak bersungguh menjayakan lakonan beliau. Komitmen beliau wajar diberi pujian.

Lakonan Saiful Apek masih 'gitu-gitu' dan tiada perubahan sepertimana lakonannya terdahulu dalam filem Anak Mami, Nana Tanjung mahupun Lady Boss. Namun, itulah trademark Saiful.

Saya cuma sedikit kecewa saja...

2.5 star - boleh la…

The Incredible Hulk

We watched the movie at the Cineplex and it was the first time for Athirah and Azhad. I can hardly concentrate since Azhad is all around me. As the green Hulk appeared he is glued to his seat than back to… “Mommy, I’m cold…” or "Mommy! Look!"

Director : Louis Leterrier

Synopsis : A cure is in reach for the world's most primal force of fury: THE INCREDIBLE HULK. We find scientist Bruce Banner, living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. But the warmongers who dream of abusing his powers won't leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Betty Ross. Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination -- a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction. One scientist must make an agonizing final choice -- accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or the creature he could permanently become: THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Written by Babak A.

By the looks of the ending of 2003 Hulk, it seemed that there is going to be a sequel. After 5 years we now have The Incredible Hulk which is a restart like Batman Begins. This version has a whole new cast, a whole new mood and even a whole new retelling of The Hulk's origin.

The latest Hulk, a computer-generated He-Man in green with torn pants and tousled hair, is a slightly improved version of the character compared to 2003 Hulk. The new Hulk is offensive in every way, with ugly vein-mottled skin and a way of ripping military jeeps in half, then hurling the hunks of metal at helicopters, to create one rampaging force — Godzilla in human body.

Most of my Hulk experience comes from the old ‘70s TV series…loved that show! That why, I like the cameo appearance by Lou Ferrigno, that induce some nostalgia for the analog days when a superhero could be impersonated by an actual person.

The plot here is pretty much the basic Hulk comics plot: Banner doesn’t want to become the Hulk but the military won’t leave him, result??? Lots of noise, bullets, explosions and violence. Parts of it make absolutely no sense but leave you brain at the entrance and go for the ride.

The improvements in CGI technology are on full display here. The Hulk is darker and more olive than green skin. His movements are fluid and the effects in general are seamless. The battle scene at a college campus, is ear-shatteringly spectacular. You see clarly the bullets impact on the Hulk’s skin and his veins bulging as he rages at the soldiers. The Abomination - his name really matches his personality and he is not wearing any underpants??? OMG!!!!!

Great? No lah! But it’s certainly a crowd-pleaser.

3.0 star - a perfect popcorn movie…

Jumper

Director : Doug Liman

Synopsis : David Rice is a high school student in Ann Arbor, abandoned by his mother at five, enamored with Millie, a fellow student, and picked on by at least one classmate. On a winter's day, while about to drown, he discovers he can transport himself instantaneously to anyplace on earth. He leaves town, goes to New York City, robs a bank vault, and comes to the attention of a shadowy group of government hunters. Eight years later, the hunters, led by the murderous Roland, get a fix on David. He heads home, searches out Millie, invites her to travel with him, and only later realizes that Roland and his crew are seriously deadly. Is everyone close to David in danger? Written by http://www.imdb.com/SearchPlotWriters?%7Bjhailey@hotmail.com%7D

Jumper is based on a series of teen sci-fi novels by Stephen Gould, a streetwise Harry Potter with wormholes instead of wands. The movie is mutliplex-friendly adventure full of raging hormones and CGI effects.

Just imagine… being able to teleport yourself anywhere in the world in the blink of an eye through your own personal wormhole. Visit every place in the world that you wanted to see. In this story, David can then rob banks, buy penthouses, sleep with girls in London and teleport out of their bedrooms onto a surfboard in Fiji before they've even had a chance to ask for phone number. But… David also just stepped into a war between Jumpers and their government-sanctioned enemies, Paladins. Tough, huh?

The truth is Hayden Christiansen is a terrible actor. Samuel L. Jackson with a snow white hair makes him a sort of film slut. He really need to read and understand the scripts before accepting the role. The other Jumper, Jamie Bell smashingly outshines Hayden, but even he can’t save this movie. It could have been an incredible movie. They took what certainly looked like a great idea and destroyed it with the insertion of a love story. The element of love story didn’t bother me much but bad acting, weak plot and worse dialogue makes the movie has nothing to be remembered about.

Personally I think this is an expensive movie - besides the incredible effects, the amazing landscapes and city scenes from the Colosseum in Rome, to the pyramids in Egypt and to Eiffel Tower in Paris. The CGI action is impressive for example during the car chase in Tokyo and the battle between the two Jumpers and Paladins from London to Chechnya.

It doesn’t quite live up to my expectations.

2.5 star - it's a decent enough rental…
