Earth Day 2008

Hey! Today is Earth Day… after what we have done to her, just for today, do avoid yourself from making more pollutions to the Mother for all… let jez freeze and relax for awhile. She is all what we have right now and she is offering it less and less… we already consume more than she can provide…

I remember the first time I heard of earth Day was in 1990 back to ITM days. My ex-boyfriend at that time (now my hubby la.. hehe) was performing a show on saving Earth and I was invited to watch the performance. Ala… citer lama ler nih…

Now Earth Day has been widely known in Malaysia. Thanks to Hitz Morning Crew this morning, who brought up the issue and poke with this idea. I love those gila2 guys!

So what are we doing to keep our Mother happy? This is what I do… probably its less than you do but at least I am working on it. J In fact I am teaching and showing my children why we must protect our planet. Maybe you can tiru me also, I don’t mind…

I recycle of course!

  • I don’t litter and teach my children to throw rubbish at the right place.

  • Print in draft mode

  • Reduce printing by using online transaction

  • Save paper by using it as many time as you can, double print or cut it to pieces

  • Differentiate your garbage organic and non organic waste

  • Plant trees and vegetables

  • Use environmental friendly soap and detergent

  • Re-use plastic bags, plastic containers and boxes

  • Switch off the lights and plugs that not in use i.e. air conditioning, water heater

  • Use less water i.e. close water tap while brushing teeth

  • At work, turn off PC, printer, copy machines and lights when going out especially for lunch

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle office products – papers, printer inks, florescent bulbs, binders, plastic book cover, envelopes

  • Join recycle forum

Other tips!
Read the tips below and explore the Consumer's Handbook for Reducing Solid Waste (http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/reduce/catbook)

Reduce:

  • Buy permanent items instead of disposables.

  • Buy and use only what you need.

  • Buy products with less packaging.

  • Buy products that use less toxic chemicals.

Reuse:

  • Repair items as much as possible.

  • Use durable coffee mugs.

  • Use cloth napkins or towels.

  • Clean out juice bottles and use them for water.

  • Use empty jars to hold leftover food.

  • Reuse boxes.

  • Purchase refillable pens and pencils.

  • Participate in a paint collection and reuse program. For information on handling household solid waste, visit Wastes, What You Can Do (http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/osw/citizens.htm).

  • Donate extras to people you know or to charity instead of throwing them away.

  • Reuse grocery bags as trash bags.

Recycle:

  • Recycle paper (printer paper, newspapers, mail, etc.), plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans. If your community doesn't collect at the curb, take them to a collection center.

  • Compost food scraps, grass and other yard clippings, and dead plants.

  • Handle toxics properly - What's under your kitchen sink, in your garage, in your bathroom, and on the shelves in your laundry room? Learn more about what's in these products, about potential health effects, and about safety and handling. A database of household products tells you more(http://hpd.nlm.nih.gov/) Common household items such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides contain hazardous components. Although we cannot completely stop using hazardous products, we can make sure that leftovers are managed properly. The best way to handle household hazardous waste is to give leftovers to someone else to use.

Lastly my friends, do recycle your hand phones too…
